Overview
The best gift to get for your dad is a thoughtful one that fits within your budget, but also something he’ll actually want and use. Is the whole family buying together or is it just you? Also, the chances of finding something he’ll love are higher if you know what he likes, so if you don’t know then you might want to find out!
Introduction
I actually think this is a pretty tough question, and it depends on many things including who is buying, your relationship with him and whether you even know what he wants.
I know that’s not very helpful but in the next section I’ll list out the key factors and how they affect the answer.
What kind of relationship do you have with him?
This is probably the most important factor. If you’re very close to him and spend lots of time together then it’s probably easy because you’ll have a good idea of what he likes and will use.
On the other hand if you haven’t seen him for years and hardly communicate then it’s going to be difficult! You don’t really have any options other than guessing or asking someone who knows him better than you do.
What sort of thing does he like?
Well obviously if you’re close to him you’ll know what kind of things he likes, so this will be easier. But if not then either ask him (which might spoil the surprise), or ask someone else who knows better than you.
If none of those are possible then just pick something that most people would like. For example:
- Food – anything from sweets & chocolate up to a meal out somewhere fancy.
- An experience such as a day at a spa or some kind of sporting activity.
- Some sort of gadget like a coffee grinder or smart light bulb.
Is it just from you or from several people?
If it’s just from you then unless you’ve got plenty of spare cash it’ll have to be something quite modest such as an edible treat, a silly gadget or perhaps just an old-fashioned card.
If there are several people chipping in then maybe go for something more substantial such as an experience day, concert tickets or maybe some kind of smart device like a speaker, watch or set-top box.
If there are several people involved but each buying their own thing then just follow my advice above for individuals – maybe get an edible treat or little gadget.
How much do you want to spend?
This is obviously up to you (or the group), but here are some guidelines:
- If this is your partner and his birthday (rather than Christmas) then typically people spend about £20-£50 on a present. That said, many couples have agreed not to buy each other presents because they don’t need anything and they’re wasting their money!
- If this is your partner who has everything already, maybe get him something silly like some hot chilli sauce or sweet fudge – see my suggestions below.
- If this is a Christmas present for your partner then probably similar to birthday; about £20-£50 on average.
A few ideas
The list below contains all sorts of things – some edible, some useful, some are experiences and others are just fun little gadgets such as:
- a remote-control fart machine which is always fun at home or work;
- a little puzzle game;
- a mystery box containing something random; or
- a ‘grow your own chillies’ kit.
I won’t go through all these individually because there are too many, but I’m sure there will be something suitable here whether it’s for someone close to you or someone more distant on whom you don’t want to spend too much.
I’ve listed them roughly in price order with the cheapest at the top. The first few are under £10 and there’s plenty under £20 too – even some of the experience days!
- Edible treats
There’s loads here! Several different types of hot sauce including naga & ghost pepper which really is stupidly hot. There’s also fudge which isn’t particularly unusual but we guarantee that ours tastes better than any other. There’s also jelly beans containing both nice flavours and disgusting ones like rotten egg and canned dog food.
- Silly gadgets
- Puzzle games
- Mystery boxes
I hope that was helpful!
