The best way to choose a card for your friend is to carefully consider her personality and what message you want to give to her. Also think about whether you want something that’s truly unique or just a bit unusual.
There are many types of cards available, from gentle funny ones to the more edgy and weird sort.
The most important thing is to consider her personality and your relationship with her. You should also consider the sort of card you want, which will be determined by the sort of person she is.
I’ve explained this in detail below.
What sort of person is she?
The most important thing to consider is what sort of person she is; does she like to joke around or is she the more introverted type? If she does like a joke, what sort? Is she the kind who likes ‘direct’ humour (like me!) or something a bit more subtle?
Or do you think she’d appreciate something that’s genuinely cute and supportive? I would always suggest getting something that’s a bit different from what everyone else would send but that’s up to you really. What sort of relationship do you have with her?
This is obviously related to the previous point but it’s worth thinking about nonetheless. Do you know her well enough to be sure that she won’t be offended if you send her something a little bit mean? Usually if it’s someone we know well, we’ll know how they’ll react, but this isn’t always true.
If in doubt, go for something light-hearted that could be interpreted either as a joke or as serious. That way if it all goes wrong (and she tells you while crying) you can say ‘oh I didn’t mean it like that!’, or if she laughs then you can say ‘haha yes I meant every word’.
It’s all about being able to back-pedal quickly and convincingly if needed!
Do you want something unique?
Probably not surprisingly I’d say yes! The best way to show someone that you care about them is by giving them something unique. It means that rather than going for the obvious option, you’ve taken time and effort to find something special just for them.
It doesn’t really matter whether it’s funny or cute or whatever, as long as it stands out from all the other cards they get.
If nothing else, this means they’ll remember it (and therefore who sent it) and are likely to keep it for years after their birthday.
