Most important thing to consider when choosing a rude gift
It’s probably not a good idea to buy something for your friend that is so offensive it upsets them, so you need to think about what they will like and what sort of sense of humour they have.
This is easy if you know them well, which you probably do if they're your friend.
But on the other hand, if you've not known them a long time you haven't had a chance to work this stuff out, so you’ll have to do a bit of research and ask the people who know them well. It’s also a good idea to find out about the sort of things they like; for example, do they have a favourite animal or do they prefer to receive something practical or decorative?
If they really are a new friend and you can't find out much about them, then it’s probably best to choose something that is not too extreme. The challenge now is to balance your card or gift between being something boring at one end of the scale and offensive on the other.
If you go for something boring and generic they're unlikely to hate it, but if you go for something extreme, they're more likely to, but there is also a chance they'll love it (which is not likely if you just get something generic).

I find the best approach is to just buy something that you'd like to receive yourself. If you like it, the chances are that they will too, assuming you're the same sort of person, which you probably are as you're friends.
And if they don't like it, make it easy for them to give it back to you. My friends often do this, we choose gifts we like, give it to someone, and if they like it, they keep it, and if they don't they give it back, knowing it'll be appreciated. Sounds stupid but it's funny!
